Monday evening, November 16th, 2009, our Lord and Savior called home His lifelong servant, Charles T. Turner, Jr. A respected member of the local business community as well as Patriarch of the Turner Family, Mr. Turner will be sorely missed by the friends and family he leaves behind.
He was preceded in death by his much beloved daughter, Nancy Turner Truss and 6 of his 8 siblings. Left to mourn his passing are his wife of 62 years, Helen Snow Turner, his son Charles (Chuck) Turner III and his wife Laura, his son-in-law Richard Truss, grandchildren Allison Turner, Garrett Turner, and Cole Truss, and great granddaughter Piper Reiser. His surviving brothers are Ray Turner of Bedford, VA. and Frank Turner of Greensboro, NC.
Born in Bedford, VA. on May 18th, 1923, he attended Lynchburg College before joining the military to fight for his country in WWII. Upon leaving the military he began his long career in retail sales with the W.T. Grant Co. as a store clerk. During his 30 years with that company he rose through the ranks to ultimately become Merchandise Manager for the Southeast U.S. by the time Grant's closed it's doors in 1976. With Grant's no longer in operation, Charlie returned to Birmingham with his family and opened a rental business that eventually became Turner Rental with stores in Hoover, Irondale and Center Point. The focus of the business shifted to Party Rentals and Sales with the opening of the Party Time store in Vestavia Hills in 1993. He dearly loved the businesses he built and the many friends he made through them over the years.
Mr. Turner was a longtime member of Dawson Memorial Baptist Church in Homewood. He was a man of great faith and character as well as a wonderful husband and father to his children. He always wanted the best for his family and will be greatly missed by them along with the countless friends and neighbors who were fortunate enough to have known him.
Services were held at Ridout's Valley Chapel Funeral Home in Homewood on Saturday, November 21st followed by a graveside service at Southern Heritage Cemetery in Pelham. The family asks that in lieu of flowers that contributions be made to the Norma Livingston Ovarian Cancer Foundation, Dawson Memorial Baptist Church or your favorite charity.
